The Energy Policy Act of 1992 (EPAct) and subsequent legislation require federal government agencies to incorporate alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) into their fleets and/or adopt other strategies to reduce fleets' petroleum use. This chart shows EPAct AFV acquisition requirements, total actual AFV acquisitions, and additional credits toward the acquisition requirements (resulting from biodiesel fuel consumption) for all covered federal agencies from fiscal year (FY) 2000 through FY 2023. From 2021 through 2023, the number of AFV Requirements has remained above the AFV Acquisitions, a notable change from 2004-2020. For more data on federal fleets, see the performance data section of the Federal Energy Management Program website. This website provides guidance and assistance to help implement the federal legislative and regulatory requirements that mandate reduced petroleum consumption and increased alternative fuel use.
