Alternative Fuel Vehicles for the State Fleets: Results of the 5-Year Planning Process
5/1/1993
This report documents the first attempt by the Department of Energy (DOE) to work with states to prepare five-year Alternative Fuel Vehicle (AFV) acquisition plans to identify alternative fuels and vehicles that they are planning on or would like to acquire. These plans will be used in conjunction with previously gathered Federal five-year plans to encourage Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to expand the variety of AFVs produced, reduce the incremental cost of AFVs, and to encourage fuel suppliers to expand the alternative fuel infrastructure and alternative fuel availability. By identifying the needs and requirements of state fleets, DOE can begin to describe the specific nature of the future state fleets, and establish a defined market for OEMs and fuel suppliers.

Ethanol and Agriculture: Effect of Increased Production on Crop and Livestock Sectors
5/1/1993
Expanded ethanol production could increase U.S. farm income by as much as $1 billion (1.4 percent) by 2000. Because corn is the primary feedstock for ethanol, growers in the Corn Belt would benefit most from improved ethanol technology and heightened demand. Coproducts from the conversion process (corn gluten meal, corn gluten feed, and others) compete with soybean meal, so soybean growers in the South may see revenues decline. The U.S. balance of trade would improve with increased ethanol production as oil import needs decline.

Evaluation of Aftermarket Fuel Delivery Systems for Natural Gas and LPG Vehicles
9/1/1992
This study evaluates the effectiveness of aftermarket fuel delivery systems for compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). The author performed a detailed literature and product review to evaluate the performance, emissions, drivability, and safety of vehicles fueled by CNG or LPG. The study concluded that both CNG- and LPG-fueled vehicles have the potential for clean, economical, and safe operation. A list of research priorities is included.

Final Report of the Interagency Commission on Alternative Motor Fuels
9/1/1992
This final report of the Interagency Commission on Alternative Motor Fuels describes progress to date in implementing the provisions of the Alternative Motor Fuels Act of 1988 (AMFA; Public Law 100-494). The purpose of AMFA is to help achieve energy security, improve air quality, and encourage the production of methanol-, ethanol-, and natural-gas-powered motor vehicles by encouraging the development and widespread consumer use of methanol, ethanol, and natural gas as transportation fuels. AMFA seeks to help alternative transportation fuels reach the threshold level of commercial application and consumer acceptability at which they can successfully compete with petroleum-based transportation fuels.
