American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009
President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009 (Public Law 111-5), which directs nearly $800 billion toward the creation of jobs, economic growth, tax relief, improvements in education and healthcare, infrastructure modernization, and investments in energy independence and renewable energy technologies. Specifically, the ARRA provides $16.8 billion for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE). This funding will support a variety of alternative fuel and advanced vehicle technology grant programs, research and development initiatives, and fleet improvement efforts. The ARRA also expands the existing tax credits for installing alternative fuel infrastructure and purchasing plug-in electric vehicles, and provides additional funding for the Advanced Technology Vehicle Manufacturing Loan Program. The complete legislation can be viewed on the Library of Congress website.
