Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Building Standards

When adopting a new code after Dec. 31, 2026, the New York State Fire Prevention and Building Code Council will require new buildings with new off-street parking to provide a minimum number of EV-ready spaces and installed EV charging stations, to be specified by the council. Detached 1–2-family dwellings may be required only to be EV-ready. “EV-ready” means all electrical components necessary to enable EV charging, terminating in a receptacle or outlet. The council must issue technical specifications; consider environmental goals, building needs, equitable access, and commercial needs; allow multifamily wiring to unit meters or submeters; require signage; and provide exemptions for affordable housing agreements. Additional conditions apply.
