Natural Gas Vehicle Conversions
Related Information
Natural gas vehicle conversions provide options beyond what is available from original equipment manufacturers (OEMs). Qualified service retrofitters (QSRs) can economically and reliably convert many light- and medium-duty vehicles for natural gas operation. Natural gas engines and fueling systems are also available for some heavy-duty vehicles.
NGVAmerica offers information on light-, medium-, and heavy-duty natural gas vehicles and engines available directly from OEMs or via conversion systems certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or the California Air Resources Board. It also provides manufacturer and QSR contact information.
Vehicle conversions in the United States require EPA certification, and a QSR should perform the installation. See the AFDC's Conversions page for information on regulations, codes, and standards that apply to all alternative fuel and advanced vehicle conversions.
The upfront costs to convert fleet vehicles to natural gas can be offset by lower operating and maintenance costs over the lifespan of the vehicles. The payback period depends on the fleet’s average distance traveled, required fueling infrastructure costs, and other considerations.
