The Clean Cities and Communities Alternative Fuel Price Report for January 2025 is a quarterly report on the prices of alternative fuels in the U.S. and their relation to gasoline and diesel prices. This issue describes prices that were gathered from Clean Cities and Communities coalition directors and stakeholders between January 1, 2025 and January 15, 2025, and then averaged in order to determine regional price trends by fuel and variability in fuel price within regions and among regions. The prices collected for this report represent retail, at-the-pump sales prices for each fuel, including Federal and state motor fuel taxes.

Table 2 reports that the nationwide average price (all amounts are per gallon) for regular gasoline has decreased 19 cents from $3.25 to $3.06; diesel decreased 9 cents from $3.64 to $3.55; CNG increased 8 cents from $2.91 to $2.99; ethanol (E85) decreased 17 cents from $2.74 to $2.57; propane decreased 2 cents from $3.35 to $3.33; and biodiesel (B20) decreased 19 cents from $3.53 to $3.34.

According to Table 3, CNG is 7 cents less than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis and E85 is 28 cents more than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis.

This issue describes prices that were gathered from Clean Cities and Communities coalition directors and stakeholders between October 1, 2024 and October 15, 2024, and then averaged in order to determine regional price trends by fuel and variability in fuel price within regions and among regions. The prices collected for this report represent retail, at-the-pump sales prices for each fuel, including Federal and state motor fuel taxes.

Table 2 reports that the nationwide average price (all amounts are per gallon) for regular gasoline has decreased 28 cents from $3.53 to $3.25; diesel decreased 23 cents from $3.87 to $3.64; CNG decreased 1 cent from $2.92 to $2.91; ethanol (E85) decreased 25 cents from $2.99 to $2.74; propane decreased 7 cents from $3.42 to $3.35; and biodiesel (B20) decreased 20 cents from $3.73 to $3.53.

According to Table 3, CNG is 34 cents less than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis and E85 is 31 cents more than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis.

Electric Medium- and Heavy-Duty Vehicle Charging Infrastructure Attributes and Development

This report focuses on charging and infrastructure requirements for medium- and heavy-duty (MD/HD) vehicles in addition to potential synergies with light-duty vehicle (LDV) infrastructure. As electric vehicle (EV) deployments are more mature in the LDV sectors than MD/HD, quantitative inputs for modeling requirements for MD/HD are also still in development. That said, this report presents more qualitative analyses than quantitative. Specifically, the report covers vehicle classes, populations, and types of charging; MD/HD dwelling at depots vs. residences; and en-route MD/HD charging infrastructure, including electrical and physical space needs, connectors, and payment, pricing, and grid considerations. The report also provides considerations for appropriate fleet targeting for vehicle electrification.

According to Table 3, CNG is 61 cents less than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis and E85 is 36 cents more than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis.

Table 2 reports that the nationwide average price (all amounts are per gallon) for regular gasoline has increased 59 cents from $3.06 to $3.65; diesel increased 13 cents from $3.94 to $4.07; CNG decreased 5 cents from $2.95 to $2.90; ethanol (E85) increased 41 cents from $2.55 to $2.96; propane decreased 4 cents from $3.49 to $3.45; and biodiesel (B20) increased 11 cents from $3.83 to $3.94.

According to Table 3, CNG is 75 cents less than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis and E85 is 20 cents more than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis.

According to Table 3, CNG is 11 cents less than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis and E85 is 26 cents more than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis.

Adoption of Plug-in Electric Vehicles: Local Fuel Use and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions Across the U.S

This report aims to fill a research gap in the local effects of the benefits of electric vehicle (EV) adoption. The report estimates the fuel cost savings and greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions at the state and local zip code levels, considering local fuel prices, vehicle class preferences, vehicle model years, fuel efficiencies, and driving intensities. The report found that EV adoption can result in annual savings up to $2,200. Additionally, the report found that in over 99% of U.S. zip codes, EVs result in overall savings in fuel use and GHG emissions.

According to Table 3, CNG is 87 cents less than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis and E85 is 24 cents more than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis.

Table 2 reports that the nationwide average price (all amounts are per gallon) for regular gasoline has increased 38 cents from $3.31 to $3.69; diesel decreased 33 cents from $4.58 to $4.25; CNG decreased 26 cents from $3.25 to $2.99; ethanol (E85) increased 21 cents from $2.77 to $2.98; propane decreased 3 cents from $3.66 to $3.63; and biodiesel (B20) decreased 44 cents from $4.46 to $4.02.

According to Table 3, CNG is 70 cents less than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis and E85 is 19 cents more than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis.

According to Table 3, CNG is $1.17 less than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis and E85 is 8 cents more than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis.

Ready Set Go! 2023 Ethanol Outlook

While the U.S. economy experienced turbulence in 2022, the ethanol industry’s financial performance was strong and biorefineries continued to stimulate crucial economic activity in communities across the country. Consumer price inflation was the highest in decades, spurred in part by record gasoline prices that put a damper on fuel demand. However, the ethanol content of gasoline (i.e., the ethanol “blend rate”) continued to increase due to its cost-competitiveness and the expanded availability of E15 and flex fuels. And, as international markets also faced high fuel prices and tight supplies, ethanol exports rose sharply. As a result, ethanol production increased to more than 15.4 billion gallons and has now almost rebounded to pre-pandemic levels. This report looks at the state of the ethanol industry in 2022 and focus areas for 2023.

Table 2 reports that the nationwide average price (all amounts are per gallon) for regular gasoline has increased 57 cents from $4.13 to $4.70; diesel increased 58 cents from $5.06 to $5.64; CNG increased 17 cents from $2.59 to $2.76; ethanol (E85) increased 39 cents from $3.54 to $3.93; propane increased 26 cents from $3.53 to $3.79; and biodiesel (B20) increased 72 cents from $4.62 to $5.34.

According to Table 3, CNG is $1.94 less than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis and E85 is 40 cents more than gasoline on an energy-equivalent basis.

Assessment of Light-Duty EV Costs and Consumer Benefits in the United States in the 2022–2035 Time Frame

This paper analyzes bottom-up vehicle component-level costs to assess average battery electric vehicle, plug-in hybrid vehicle, and conventional vehicle prices across major U.S. light-duty vehicle classes through 2035. These cost estimates are used to evaluate broader consumer benefits, as well as to discuss the implications for vehicle emission regulations in the United States.
