Cellulosic biofuels include fuels derived from nonfood-based feedstocks like grasses, corn fiber cellulose, agricultural residues, and sawdust. This category is dominated by renewable natural gas (compressed and liquefied) with smaller amounts of cellulosic ethanol and cellulosic diesel (Renewable [EE1.1]Identification Number [RIN] codes D3 and D7). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) updates volume requirements each year based on fuel availability. Mandates and RINs are ethanol equivalent. 2023 was the largest shortfall in RINs generated compared to the EPA Requirement.
