This chart shows total U.S. vehicle miles traveled (VMT) for each month of the year, averaged from 2010 to 2020. Generally, U.S. drivers tend to log the fewest vehicle miles at the beginning of each year in January and February, and the most miles in the summer months with the peak in July. In 2020, VMT was lower from March through May due to nationwide lockdowns in the response to the COVID-19 pandemic and remained slightly lower through the year than previous years.
