This chart shows trends in U.S. biodiesel production, exports, and consumption from 2001 to 2021. Exports of biodiesel peaked in 2008 primarily because of an unintended effect of a biodiesel tax credit in the European Union. Exports then dropped after the effect was eliminated. The increased production and consumption from 2011 onward was largely driven by the Renewable Fuel Standard. In more recent years, production and consumption have declined slightly, potentially impacted by the increase in renewable diesel in the market.
