This chart shows the average fuel economy of vehicles in the United States, by major vehicle category. The metric used is gasoline gallon equivalents (GGEs), representing a quantity of fuel with the same amount of energy contained in a gallon of gasoline. Refuse trucks and transit buses have relatively low fuel economy because they are heavy and drive stop-and-go drive cycles. Class 8 trucks, which carry heavier loads but drive more consistent drive cycles, also have relatively low fuel economy. For comparison, see Average Per-Passenger Fuel Economy by Travel Mode and Average Annual Fuel Use by Vehicle Type.- Federal Highway Administration. Highway Statistics 2021, Table VM-1.
