This graph shows the estimated quantity of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) consumed in the United States, based on the Renewable Identification Numbers (RINs) volume generated as reported to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for the Renewable Fuel Standard. When blended with petroleum jet fuel, SAF meets the same fuel quality specification as petroleum jet fuel (ASTM D1655) and can be used in existing aircraft and refueling infrastructure. There is one domestic production facility and an increase in imports from an international producer. Multiple plants are under construction and development. The fuel is used primarily in California because of economic benefits provided under the Low Carbon Fuel Standard. The U.S. Departments of Agriculture, Energy, and Transportation announced the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge to meet the goals for a 50% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and for SAF to supply 100% aviation fuel demand by 2050.
