This chart shows the number and types of light-duty vehicles produced in the United States from 1975 to 2022. U.S. light-duty vehicle production was significantly impacted by the economic recession between 2009 and 2012. In 2017, for the first time, the number of sport utility vehicles (SUVs) exceeded the number of cars produced; by 2021, twice as many SUVs were produced than cars. Vehicle production dipped again from 2020 to 2022 as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic and subsequent supply-chain issues. In 2022, cars made up 26.55% of light-duty vehicles, while vans made up 2.91%, SUVs made up 54.17%, and pickups made up 16.37%. For comparison, see U.S. HEV Sales by Model.
