This chart shows the number and types of light-duty vehicles produced in the United States from 1975 to 2018. In 2009, U.S. light-duty vehicle production was significantly impacted by the economic recession. The production of light-duty vehicles has been steadily rebounding each year since the recession, and, as of 2013, has recovered to pre-2009 levels. In 2017, for the first time, sport utility vehicles (SUVs) exceeded the number of cars produced. For comparison, see U.S. HEV Sales by Model.
