Most direct energy expenditures take place in the residential and transportation sectors. Expenditures in the residential sector include electricity, natural gas, and propane bills. Expenditures in the transportation sector are comprised largely of fuel costs. Residential expenditures have been hovering around $800 over the last 14 years, whereas transportation expenditures have been more sporadic. Transportation expenditures saw large increases related to the oil price shocks of 1980, 1981, 2008, and 2012. They also saw large drops in 2009 and 2020, commensurate with reduced driving during the Great Recession and the COVID 19 lockdown, respectively.
