The total advanced biofuel Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS2) mandate includes biomass-based diesel (largely met by biodiesel), cellulosic diesel, cellulosic ethanol, renewable diesel, imported sugarcane ethanol, naptha, renewable compressed natural gas, renewable liquefied natural gas, renewable heating oil, and renewable jet fuel. This includes Renewable Identification Number (RIN) codes D3, D4, D5, and D7. Federal legislation provided yearly RFS volume requirements for each renewable fuel category. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) updates volume requirements each year based on fuel availability. EPA has reduced the cellulosic mandate each year but has kept the overall advanced biofuel mandate at the same level. EPA now sets volume requirements. Mandates and RINs are ethanol-equivalent, except for biodiesel, which is actual volume.
