Cellulosic biofuels include fuels derived from nonfood-based feedstocks like grasses, corn fiber cellulose, agricultural residues, and sawdust. This category is dominated by renewable natural gas (compressed and liquefied) with smaller amounts of cellulosic ethanol and cellulosic diesel (Renewable Identification Number [RIN] codes D3 and D7). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) updates volume requirements each year based on fuel availability. EPA has reduced the cellulosic volume requirement each year because production levels were deemed insufficient for the requirement to be met. EPA now sets required volumes. Mandates and RINs are ethanol equivalent.
