This chart breaks down U.S. oil imports by country of origin, from 1973 to 2023. Imports peaked in 2005 and declined until 2014, thanks to improvements in domestic production and reduced demand. The decline in imports was distributed across most countries. Imports from Canada, however, have been rising steadily since 1981. Most oil imports from Iraq zeroed out in 1974, 1981, and 1991-1995 as a result of the OPEC Oil Embargo, the Iran-Iraq War, and the Gulf War, respectively. From 2017 to 2022, oil imports decreased by 14.2%. The impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic likely influenced a decline of 14% in 2020 from 2019. Imports increased by 10.7% from 2020 to 2023 but remain at their lowest levels since 1995.To view more details, notes, and acronyms, please download the Excel spreadsheet.
