This chart shows how workers commuted to their workplaces between 1980 and 2019. People who drive alone account for the majority of commuting. Commuting via subway, bicycle, and ferryboat, as well as working from home, have been steadily increasing for nearly four decades. Carpooling has seen the largest drop in ridership of all means of transportation, although walking, bus, and motorcycle ridership have also seen declines. Commuting time has also been steadily increasing, up to 26.9 minutes in 2019.
