Notes: 2023 values are preliminary.
This chart shows trends in new light-duty vehicles produced in the United States from 1975 to 2023. The relative popularity of light-duty trucks—including pickups, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), and vans—increased steadily from the early 1980s through the mid-2000s. Following the oil price spikes of 1979 and 2008, there were notable decreases in the percentage of light-duty trucks. Since 2013, light-duty trucks have again been increasing in popularity and surpassed the production share of cars in 2018 for the first time. Since 2018, the truck production share has increased to 65.4% while the car production share has decreased to 34.6%. See also Power and Fuel Economy of the Average Light-Duty Vehicle.
