This chart shows trends in new light-duty vehicles in the United States from 1975 to 2021. The relative popularity of light-duty trucks—including pickups, sport utility vehicles (SUVs), and vans—increased fairly steadily from the early 1980s through the mid-2000s. Following the oil price spikes of 1979 and 2008, there were notable decreases in the percentage of light-duty trucks. Since 2013, light-duty trucks have again been increasing in popularity and surpassed the production share of cars in 2018 for the first time.
